Trinidad was founded in 1514 by Diego Velázquez as La Villa de la
Santísima Trinidad (Holy Trinity). The Spanish brought sugar cane from India,
and sugar cane mills were established in the nearby Valley de los Ingenios from the 18th
century. Slaves were brought from Africa to work on the fields, and sugar trade created prosperity
during the 19th century. In 1886 slavery was officially abolished.
