The Summer Palace or Yihe Yuan (Garden of Cultivated Harmony) has been
a summer residence for the emperors since the 12th century. Largely expanded by Emperor Qianlong in
1750, it was rebuilt in 1888 after being destroyed in 1860 by Anglo-French troops during the Second
Opium War. The imperial garden is a harmoniously designed Chinese garden landscape with its
man-made halls, pavilions and temples, as well as the hills and the lake.
