Stralsund and Wismar represent ideal cities of the Hanseatic League in the Baltic Sea from the 13th to the 15th centuries, and contributed to the development of the brick construction techniques, as, for example, the City Hall of Stralsund and several brick churches and cathedrals. In the 17th and 18th centuries these cities were under Swedish rule.
