The origins of the city of Sousse, located on the Gulf of Hammamet in the Mediterranean Sea, dates back to the 9th century BC, when it was founded by the Phoenicians with the name of Hadrumete.
In the 7th century, when it came under Arabic rule, the name was changed to Sousse.
During the Aghlabid dynasty (800-909), while Kairouan was the capital city, Sousse was an important port city.
