The cathedral of Saint-Denis is built on the site where the first bishop of Paris,
Saint Denis, was buried after his martyrdom in the 3rd century.
The site became a pilgrimage place and several churches existed before the current cathedral was built
in Gothic style in the 12th and 13th centuries.
The cathedral is the burial place for most of the kings of France, from the 5th century until the
French Revolution in 1793.
