The castle of Freyr, located on the River Meuse, was built in the 16th century on the site of a former medieval castle and enlarged in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The French-style gardens were laid in 1760 by Duke William of Beaufort-Spontin and enlarged from 1770 by his younger brother Philip.
