The Grand Place (Grote Markt), a large town square in the bilingual city (French
and Dutch) of Brussels, a marketplace since the 12th century, consists of the gothic City Hall
(15th century), the King's House (originally from the 13th century), and a number of Guild houses.
In 1695, during the War of the Grand Alliance, the square was largely destroyed, and shortly after the
houses were rebuilt in the original style.
