The Vizcaya Bridge, or Puente Colgante, designed by Alberto de Palacio, was built in 1893.
Transporter bridges allow to cross wide span rivers and estuaries, with no interruption of river traffic.
The Vizcaya Bridge, the oldest transporter bridge in the world, connects the towns of Portugalete and Getxo and has the ability to ferry both cargo and passengers.
The bridge is currently still in operation.
